Masterclass

Core Skills for Native Flute Players

1 Live Zoom Video Call
Sunday 10th MAy
11AM-12AM

This live call is recorded for replay!

LEarn how to build and master aspects of the NAtive American Flute

The Native American flute has long carried a quiet and powerful voice across landscapes and cultures. Its sound has been used for storytelling, courtship, reflection, and personal expression. Simple in form yet deeply expressive, the flute invites the player into a relationship with breath, rhythm, and listening.

This masterclass explores why the Native American flute continues to speak to people today. Not as a distant cultural artifact, but as a living instrument that allows anyone to discover music through breath and presence.

You will learn how the flute works, how the notes are structured, and how small adjustments in breath and touch can shape tone and feeling.

The focus of this learning is practical and embodied. Rather than only discussing the instrument, you will be guided through the core foundations that allow the flute to come alive in your hands. Breath control, tone development, rhythm, phrasing, and musical flow will form the base of your playing.

As the learning unfolds, you will also explore intermediate techniques that help the instrument become more expressive. Vibrato, tone variation, ornamentation, and musical phrasing will allow you to move beyond simple melodies and begin shaping music that feels personal and alive.

Through guided practice, listening, and skill development, you will learn how to move through common learning plateaus and grow in confidence as a flute player. The aim is not simply to play notes, but to develop a natural relationship with the instrument where breath, rhythm, and expression work together.

When these foundations are carried well, the flute becomes a companion for creativity, reflection, and musical storytelling.

This masterclass is an invitation to build strong roots in the instrument, grow your skills with clarity and guidance, and discover the full voice of the Native American flute.

Meet Kyle

Kyle Rose

Kyle Rose is a Medicine Man devoted to the path of shamanism and sacred sound. His work centres on ceremony, rhythm, and the intelligent use of sound to open altered states of awareness that are both grounded and expansive.

Working with a range of ancestral instruments, Kyle weaves sound, breath, and rhythm into immersive ceremonial spaces. His approach draws on shamanic trance practices and a deep listening to the natural world, allowing each session to unfold with precision and presence.

He has played the Native American flute since the age of 14 and through those 17 years has formed a long-standing relationship with the instrument. Over the years, he has performed across the UK and Europe, including alongside Chantress Seba and in support of Osara through Ecstatic Dance Bristol and ACE Collective. His playing blends traditional tones with didgeridoo techniques, percussive elements, and circular breathing, creating a dynamic and textured sound that moves between melody and rhythm.

Rooted in experience and guided by instinct, Kyle’s work is less about performance and more about transmission, using sound as a bridge between worlds, and ceremony as the ground in which it can be received.
